Space Maintainer

WHY SPACE MAINTAINER?

Keep the Space for the Permanent Tooth

When a baby tooth is lost too early, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and block the permanent tooth from coming in. A space maintainer is a small appliance that holds the space open until the permanent tooth is ready to appear.

THE PROCESS

What to Expect

A space maintainer is simple, comfortable and usually fitted within a couple of visits.

1

Examination & X-ray

We check the gap and the permanent tooth underneath to see if a space maintainer is needed.

2

Impression or Fitting

We take an impression, or fit a metal band on a nearby tooth, to make a well-fitting appliance.

3

Placing the Appliance

The finished space maintainer is cemented in place, and we check that it is comfortable.

4

Regular Reviews

We check it at every visit, and remove it once the permanent tooth is ready to come through.

GOOD TO KNOW

When It May Not Be Needed

  • If the permanent tooth is about to erupt, a space maintainer may not be needed
  • If the space has already closed, a different appliance may be needed to regain it
  • Good hygiene is needed around the appliance, so we may first treat any decay
  • Young children who cannot yet tolerate it may need extra time to adjust
